Ичиго Куросаки, не простой пятнадцатилетний школьник, который c детства мог общаться с духами и призраками, невидимыми для обычных людей. Однажды с ним сталкивается девушка-шинигами (яп.дословно «бог смерти») Рукиа Кучики, охотившаяся на одного Пустого (англ. Hollow) — злого духа. В битве с Пустым она получает ранение, и ей приходится передать свои способности Ичиго, в результате чего он сам становится шинигами, а Рукиа Кучики лишается большей части своей силы. Так начинаются приключения Ичиго и Рукии Кучики. Вместе они ищут Пустых и проводят похороны душ, очищая их и переправляя в Общество Душ (англ. Soul Society).
Сюжет развивается, когда выясняется, что передача сил шинигами человеку — серьёзное преступление в Обществе Душ. Рукию силой отнимают у Ичиго и забирают в Общество Душ, где готовятся казнить. Ичиго отправляется туда, чтобы её спасти, вместе с ним туда следуют его друзья и соученики: Урю Исида, оказывающийся представителем полувымершей расы куинси (англ. quincy), издавна враждующей с шинигами; Ясутора Садо, окинавский верзила, выросший в Мексике и называющий себя Чадом (Ched); и Орихимэ Иноуэ, скромная девушка с волшебной заколкой. Всех их готовит к трудной миссии Кисуке Урахара, бывший тайтё и сильный шинигами «на пенсии», держащий магазин в том городе, где жил Ичиго.
В Обществе Душ вся группа «вторженцев» знакомится с местными обычаями, сражается с защитниками местных законов, распутывает большую интригу и спасают жизнь Рукии, после чего возвращаются в свой мир, где их поджидают новые приключения и опасности (в 63 серии).
